Featured Exhibits

Explore the world of smart energy and examine the Science Center’s unique use of alternative energy sources. Experiment with renewable energy technologies. Discover ways to increase energy efficiency. Grasp a deeper awareness of the energy flowing throughout our lives. Learn about many renewable technologies poised to fuel our society, and global trends that make energy use a matter of vital importance. Immersive environments set the stage for each of these experiences.

Mystery Efficiency House
Using energy efficiently is an excellent way to preserve our planet. Start at home by learning how you can help our environment with the Mystery Efficiency House exhibit. Roam through this recreation of a home and interact with all of the features that are familiar to you, and discover the ones that may not be familiar. Here you will uncover cleverly embedded messages about the ways you can save energy through your own decisions. Throughout the exhibit you will find interpretive signage that will explain both the environmental and financial savings to be found through energy efficiency.

Anatomy of a Building
The staff here considers the Connecticut Science Center as our efficient house and we welcome you to the Anatomy of a Building exhibit where you can learn about the number of “green building” innovations used to build the Center. LED markers throughout a scale model of the building indicate “green” building features and will be explained based on the specific technology used at that location. You are encouraged to locate these “hot spots” in the real Center. Just like a scavenger hunt; points will be awarded for the most sites found!

Build a Better Wind Turbine
Wind, which derives from the sun’s warmth, is a virtually limitless source of energy. Large-scale wind turbines are an effective way to harness the wind’s energy to generate electricity. Here you will have an opportunity to build a turbine that generates more power than your friend’s. You will be able to experiment by changing the number, shape, pitch, and size of the blades on your turbine. Then, turn on the blower and measure your turbine’s energy output on a voltmeter.
