Senator Dodd Announces $4 Million to
Support CT Center for Science & Exploration
HARTFORD, CT – (November 30, 2005) – Connecticut U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd today toured the site of the future Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration in Hartford and announced $4 million in federal funding for the construction of Science Alley and pedestrian plaza areas linking the Center with Adriaen’s Landing, Riverfront Recapture and Downtown Hartford.
“The Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration is critical both to the revitalization of our capital city and to the next generation of scientists and engineers in our state and our nation,” said Senator Dodd. “Our nation’s economic competitiveness and the careers of our children depend on our ability to engage our young people in science, and prepare them to lead the future.”
During his visit, Senator Dodd reviewed plans for the 140,000 square foot science center, and toured the development site at the corner of Columbus Boulevard and Grove Street in Downtown Hartford.
“Thanks to the tremendous leadership of Senator Dodd, Senator Lieberman, Congressman Larson, and the entire Connecticut congressional delegation, we are on track to begin building,” said Dr. Theodore S. Sergi, president and CEO of the Center. “This is a great step forward for our community, for science learning, for the science center, for Adriaen’s Landing, and for everyone in Connecticut.”
Science Alley will be a public walkway allowing pedestrians to move easily from Columbus Boulevard at Adriaen’s Landing through the science center out to the Center’s plaza area. The plaza, to be named Phoenix Plaza, will link the Center to the existing Riverfront Promenade and a future walkway extending south to the Connecticut Convention Center’s outdoor esplanade.
The Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration will spark creative imagination and an appreciation for science by immersing visitors in fun and educational hands-on, interactive experiences. The Center, which is developing its state-of-the-art science center facility as part of Hartford’s downtown and riverfront development initiative, is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing science education throughout the state of the Connecticut, providing learning opportunities for students and adults of all ages, and engaging the community in scientific exploration.
The project celebrated its ceremonial groundbreaking October 21, 2005, and is about to begin construction. The project is being developed by the Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration with the support of the State of Connecticut Office of Policy & Management, which is managing the construction, and the Capital City Economic Development Authority, the owner of the attached garage facilities.
