Donor Profiles

Since its Board of Trustees was formed in late 2003, the Connecticut Science Center has secured $27 million in commitments. Donors have connected with the Center’s mission to inspire students to explore studies and careers in science. They are excited by the promise of hands-on, interactive exhibits that visitors of all ages will explore. They believe in the educational programs that are helping teachers and students to understand science in revolutionary ways even before the Center opens its doors. And they are supportive of another exciting addition to the downtown Hartford landscape – an attraction that will draw visitors from across the state, region and country.

The Center presents many opportunities that are inspiring corporations, foundations and individuals to commit their funds to the future of science in Connecticut.

Aetna Foundation

The Aetna Foundation is committed to building healthier communities, which is why they are funding the science center’s Picture of Health Gallery, an exploration of the intricate nature of the human body. Visitors will learn a great deal about themselves, but will also have a broader understanding of how they compare to others and the overall importance of public health.

AT&T Foundation

AT&T’s grant built an interactive Web-based program that supports science learning in schools statewide by making aspects of the Center’s content available to students and teachers online. The AT&T Learning Connection will maximize the educational potential of the Center by supplementing classroom visits made by Connecticut students with pre- and post-visit classroom discussions and activities available online. It is the key educational portal on the Center’s website.

The Cheryl Chase and Stuart Bear Family Foundation &
The Rhoda & David Chase Family Foundation

The Chase family foundations are proud to fund the Gallery of Sight and Sound Experience in the Connecticut Science Center. This popular area of the Center will draw attention to the scientific principles at work in various forms of arts. Exhibits will be developed in collaboration with area arts and culture organizations.

Connecticut Clean Energy Fund & Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund

These two ratepayer supported funds have teamed up to sponsor the an exhibit on Clean & Efficient Energy, which showcases the use of “green” technologies within the Connecticut Science Center, as well as technologies that will fuel our future. This exhibit will demonstrate ways of producing cleaner energy, and using energy more efficiently in our homes and communities.

GE Foundation

Thanks to generous support from the General Electric Foundation, the Connecticut Science Center kicked off its Institute for Inquiry in the summer of 2005. The Institute, in conjunction with the Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA, offers unique professional development and training to pre K-12 teachers across the state of Connecticut who face the challenge of preparing their students for new standards in science education.

The Hartford Financial Services Group

The Hartford Financial Services Group’s generous grant will name the Center’s rooftop garden, a landscaped plaza located atop the north wing of the building that will feature outdoor programming and views of the Connecticut River. The Hartford, a leading provider of investment and insurance products, is committed to impacting K-12 education and enhancing communities where its offices are located, in particular the Greater Hartford area.

The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving

Because of the generosity of individuals and families, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving is able to provide grants and other support to a wide range of nonprofit organizations in the Greater Hartford region. These grants make a difference in many arenas, including arts and education, health, housing and economic development, and social services. This grant to the Connecticut Science Center is supporting capital costs, operations, and program development.

Maximilian E. & Marion O. Hoffman Foundation

One of the first non-trustee donors to the Center’s campaign, the Hoffman Foundation is pleased to sponsor the Connecticut Inventions Gallery, which will demonstrate Connecticut’s long history in science innovation. An experience in this gallery may help inspire our state’s next great inventor.

Robert and Margaret Patricelli Family Foundation

Trustee Robert Patricelli had his own idea of how to support the Center. His foundation’s pledge established the Hartford Student Visitorship Fund to cover the cost of admission for classes in the city of Hartford during the Center’s first year of operations.

Pfizer Foundation

The Pfizer Foundation’s commitment to CSC will create a Science Education and Discovery Center that features classrooms and laboratories where school groups and teaching professionals can expand upon their interaction with the exhibits or perhaps go beyond the exhibit experience and explore other areas of science.

The Phoenix Companies, Inc.

In honor of the generous donation of land for the Connecticut Science Center, the outdoor plaza connecting the Center to the riverfront will bear the Phoenix Companies’ name. This public thoroughfare will provide stunning views of the Connecticut River and feature exhibits and other science-related activities or events.

Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund

KidSpace has been generously funded by the Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund, a private foundation. The Fund’s mission is to provide funding to literacy and education initiatives in key locations where Pitney Bowes has a significant presence. For information about the Pitney Bowes Literacy and Education Fund, go to www.pb.com/communityinvestments. General information about Pitney Bowes is available through the Investor Relations portion of the company’s website at www.pb.com.

United Technologies Corporation

United Technologies Corporation has long been a pioneer in science and technology, vital components of exploring the final frontier – outer space. UTC sponsors the Exploring Space Gallery, a fascinating examination of the worlds beyond planet Earth and an interactive experience for the astronaut in all of us.

H.A. Vance Foundation

The H.A. Vance Foundation made the first non-trustee gift to the Connecticut Science Center.
