General

  • Located in Hartford, Connecticut’s capital city, overlooking the Connecticut River
  • Part of the exciting 30-acre Adriaen’s Landing development and the downtown Hartford Renaissance

Vital Statistics

  • 144,000 square feet
  • 40,000 square feet of exhibit space that accommodates 200+ exhibits in ten galleries
  • North Tower is 90 ft above the plaza and 130 ft from Columbus Blvd.
  • South Tower is 112 ft above the plaza and 152 ft from Columbus Blvd.
  • Science Alley is 143 ft above the plaza at its tallest point or 183 ft from Columbus Blvd. 

Construction

  • Construction began in January 2006
  • Total of 2,500 tons of steel
  • 95% of all CSC steel is manufactured from recycled cars
  • The first steel beam was installed on April 18th

Features

  • 3D Science Theater – 200 seats
  • The “Aerie” – an observation platform extending out towards the Connecticut River from the building with dramatic views of the river and surrounding landscape
  • Science Alley, the sweeping architectural signature of the building, will feature a prominent interactive sculpture provided by Lincoln Financial
  • An accessible, planted roof adds to the energy-efficiency of the building while allowing visitors to relax outdoors, view the night sky, and attend special functions
  • Pfizer Foundation Science Discovery Center – Four specially equipped laboratories, including a Forensic Science Lab, Wet Lab, Distance Learning Lab, and Mission Simulator.
  • Phoenix plaza, an outdoor plaza providing easy access to the Connecticut River waterfront via direct connection to the Riverfront Plaza and the new Connecticut Convention Center
  • Conference and facility rentals for private, corporate and community use, including Travelers Science Hall, a 2,000sf multi-function room will provide a unique rental opportunity
  • Parking for approximately 460 vehicles

Impact

  • Attract about 350,000 – 400,000 visitors yearly, during the first few years of operation.  Bringing business to surrounding hotels, restaurants, and retailers
  • Inspire lifelong learning and excite the next generation of scientists
  • Serve as a magnet to Connecticut’s capital city, providing a connection to the river and neighborhood
  • Create over 100 jobs
  • Provide business opportunities to Connecticut (food vendors, architect, security, gift shop)
  • Host numerous private events
  • Partner with Connecticut Visitors Bureau, Rivervalley Tourism District, area convention centers and Meeting Planners International to help bring conventions to the area.
