New Exhibit: Identity

Coming soon: MathAlive!
Opens May 28

MathAlive! makes its first-ever stop in New England this summer at the Connecticut Science Center, bringing an incredible mix of hands-on activities, challenges, and games to answer that perennial question, "When will we ever use all this math they're teaching us?" MathAlive! reveals the math behind the things we love, like video games, sports, design, music, and robotics. Within each section of the exhibit, you’ll meet inspiring professionals—artists, skaters, engineers, musicians, game developers, and more—who use math every day in their exciting and varied careers. You will learn that math is integral to the way we live, play, work, blow off steam, and interact with the world around us.

Get ready to discover the endless applications of math in the real world. MathAlive! opens May 28 and runs through September 1, 2013.

Physical & Genetic Identity

Outdoor Action…Adventure Sports

Math is an adventure! Race others in a snowboard ride, design a skateboard with POP to perform the best tricks, and compete in a mountain bike challenge!

Psychological Identity

Build Your World…Environment

How does math help create a sustainable environment? Design a transport network, keep a city humming during an emergency, test water samples, and learn what happens when a video goes viral.

Social Identity

Future Style…Style and Design

Art and design are impossible without math. See amazing natural patterns, play with shapes to create beautiful arrangements, and see yourself in 360 degrees after a freeze-motion photo shoot!

Social Identity

Kickin’ It…Entertainment

Use math to mix tracks like a professional DJ, craft the perfect animated movie, and create special effects during your own personal dance party.

Social Identity

Game Plan…Video Games and Other Games

Game developers and programmers use math to build the virtual worlds we love to explore. Use math to develop your own game and crack programming codes. Then, hear from kids who have made real video games—and take a turn playing them yourself!

Social Identity

Robotics and Space

Have you ever wondered how astronauts do their jobs? See for yourself! Use a robotic arm to work on a space station, control a Mars rover, and view images taken on the Hubble Telescope.
