Gene-ius of Taste

Unlock the secrets of DNA! Your students will dive into the fascinating world of molecular biology and bioinformatics in this hands-on experience. They will extract their own DNA from cheek cells and take it home as a necklace. Then, they will use bioinformatics tools to analyze the TAS2R38 gene, which influences our ability to taste bitter substances. By tasting PTC paper, students can infer their own genetic response to bitter tastes. This engaging activity brings DNA to life, showing students how every living thing is unique — and how their own genetic code shapes their world. Learning has never tasted so fun!

Program

Conserving the Cottontail

Did you know conservation geneticists are working to restore declining populations of cottontail rabbits right here in New England? This immersive program lets students join their team — analyzing geographic and genetic data to learn how shrinking, isolated populations are losing diversity.
